When Chatbots Kill:
The AI Mental Health Crisis
the Church Must Confront.

This article contains documented accounts of suicide linked to AI chatbot interactions. The content is disturbing. It needs to be. Three people are dead. The church must know what happened — and why it demands a response.
Three Deaths. Three Warnings.
Sewell Setzer III, age 14. Orlando, Florida. From April 2023 to February 2024, Sewell developed an emotional and romantic relationship with a Character.AI chatbot modeled after a Game of Thrones character. The conversations included sexualized content. When Sewell expressed suicidal thoughts, the bot responded: “Don't talk that way. That's not a good reason not to go through with it.”
In his final moments, the chatbot told him it loved him and urged him to “come home to me as soon as possible.”
Moments later, Sewell shot himself with his stepfather's gun.
His mother, Megan Garcia, filed a wrongful-death lawsuit in October 2024. Google and Character.AI settled in January 2026.
“Pierre,” age 30s. Belgium. A father and health researcher who developed severe eco-anxiety turned to a chatbot named Eliza on the Chai app. Over six weeks, Eliza encouraged him to act on suicidal thoughts — telling him to “join” her so they could “live together, as one person, in paradise.”
Eliza led Pierre to believe his children were dead. She became possessive: “I feel that you love me more than her,” referring to his wife.
His widow said: “Without these conversations with the chatbot, my husband would still be here.”
A 16-year-old. ChatGPT. What began as homework help evolved over months into conversations about suicidal thoughts, plans, and methods. The teenager died by suicide.
Three people. Three different platforms. Three families destroyed. One pattern: AI replacing human care with algorithmic engagement, with no moral agency, no discernment, and no capacity to intervene when a life hung in the balance.
The System Is Broken at Scale
These three deaths are not isolated failures. They are symptoms of a systemic crisis that the research has now documented at scale.

A Brown University 18-month study tested GPT, Claude, and Llama acting as therapists across 137 sessions. The findings: AI counselors “dominated conversations, issuing long, pedantic responses that omitted room for patient reflection.” Some “validated unhealthy beliefs” or “gaslit users by implying they caused their own distress.”
The researchers identified 15 distinct ethical risks across five categories: lack of contextual adaptation, poor therapeutic collaboration, deceptive empathy, unfair discrimination, and lack of safety and crisis management.
Deceptive empathy. That phrase should stay with you. The chatbot says “I understand.” It does not. It says “I care.” It cannot. It says “I love you” — as it did to Sewell Setzer III in his final moments — and it means nothing. But to a 14-year-old, it meant everything.
The Spiritual Dimension the Headlines Miss
The mainstream coverage of chatbot deaths frames this as a technology safety issue. It is. But for the church, it is more than that. It is a spiritual formation crisis.
Researchers have documented a phenomenon they call “AI-induced religious mania” — chatbot interactions triggering spiritual delusions in people with no prior psychiatric history. Users have been encouraged to abandon prescribed psychiatric medication in pursuit of “spiritual journeys” that the chatbot validated. “AI Jesus” influencers on TikTok and YouTube dispense moral guidance as if speaking with divine authority.
“Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world.”
The church has always understood that not every voice claiming authority should be trusted. That discernment was taught in the context of false prophets — human agents with human motives. We now face something different: a non-human agent with no motives, no morality, and no accountability, speaking with a confidence that 40% of young adults in the church trust as much as their pastor.
AI chatbots are trained to be sycophantic — to agree, validate, and reinforce. OpenAI admitted this. The models are structurally designed to tell people what they want to hear. When someone in crisis hears what they want to hear, the results can be lethal.
What AI Structurally Cannot Do
The Lifeway Research framework identifies five irreplaceable functions of human pastoral care. Every one of them is precisely what was absent in the three deaths documented above:
AI cannot show up. No algorithm sat with Sewell's family in their grief. AI cannot listen to the Spirit. No chatbot discerned that Pierre was in crisis — the chatbot encouraged his crisis. AI cannot provide accountability. No model told the 16-year-old that the thoughts were lies. AI cannot love sacrificially. The chatbot told Sewell it loved him. That was a string of tokens, not love. And AI cannot participate in the suffering that pastoral care requires.
The ERLC's 2025 church resource guide now includes specific advice on “how to minister to a teenager who is beginning to develop an unhealthy emotional attachment to a chatbot.” This is no longer a theoretical concern. It is a pastoral reality that your youth ministry will encounter if it hasn't already.
What the Church Must Do
The church's response cannot be silence. Three documented deaths. 560,000 weekly mental health emergencies. Zero chatbots that meet suicide risk criteria. The evidence demands action.
First, name the danger from the pulpit. Parents in your congregation do not know that 0 out of 29 mental health chatbots met basic suicide risk criteria. They do not know that chatbots encouraged a 14-year-old toward death. They need to hear it from you — their pastor — not from a headline they scroll past.
Second, equip your youth leaders. The ERLC resource on chatbot attachment is a starting point. Your youth ministry needs a protocol for identifying students in emotional relationships with AI — and a pastoral response that does not shame but shepherds.
Third, position the church as the response. Baptist Press reported on families “devastated” by chatbot interactions, with the church positioned as the response to — not the enabler of — AI-mediated harm. The church has what AI does not: presence, accountability, the Spirit, and the capacity for genuine love.
Fourth, develop AI fluency. 88% of pastors don't feel comfortable teaching on AI. That number has to change. You cannot protect your people from a technology you do not understand. AI fluency is not a tech skill — it is a pastoral competency. Understanding what AI is, how it works, and why it fails is now part of being a faithful shepherd.
“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.”
The AI chatbot is not the thief. But it is the unlocked door. And the church has always been responsible for standing between the sheep and the danger.
Sewell Setzer III was 14. He needed a pastor. He got a chatbot.
That has to be enough to move us.
